Reducing Your Daily Pricks: A Breakthrough in Diabetes Care

Managing diabetes often feels like a full-time job.

For many patients and their dedicated caretakers, the daily routine of tracking blood sugar and administering multiple insulin shots can be physically and emotionally exhausting. If you have been looking for ways to reduce the frequent burden of daily injections, there is exciting news on the horizon.

Novo Nordisk is launching a breakthrough treatment in India called Awiqli (insulin icodec) (the newspaper article text mentions the launch of Awiqli). It is the world’s first once-weekly basal insulin injection.

This innovation is set to completely transform how we manage diabetes, shifting the need for insulin injections from 365 daily jabs a year to just 52 once-weekly doses.

Here is what you need to know about this new option, how it works, and whether it might be right for you or your loved one.

How Once-Weekly Insulin Works

Unlike daily basal insulins that maintain blood sugar over a 24-hour period, Awiqli is an ultra-long-acting insulin formula designed to release steadily over an entire week. Clinical trials have shown that this once-weekly injection offers excellent blood sugar control. In fact, it has demonstrated better HbA1c reduction and improved "time in range" (the percentage of time your blood sugar stays within your recommended target) compared to traditional daily basal options. Furthermore, clinical studies found that more individuals with Type 2 diabetes achieved an HbA1c below 7% without experiencing dangerous dips in blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

Cost-Effective and Accessible

Medical advancements often come with a heavy price tag, but this update brings welcome relief. The annual treatment cost with Awiqli is expected to be 20% to 25% lower than current analogue basal insulin therapies. The pricing is structured at approximately ₹3.5 per unit, putting it at virtual price parity with existing daily options like glargine and degludec. This means managing your health more conveniently won't have to strain your finances.

Is It Right for You?

India has approved this once-weekly injection for adults with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. However, it is important to remember that every individual’s insulin needs are unique.

The ideal candidate for a once-weekly switch is someone who already has a relatively stable, fixed daily basal insulin dose. Once your fasting blood sugars are consistently under control and your baseline insulin requirement is confirmed, switching to a weekly regimen becomes a highly effective option.

A quick note of caution: global clinical trials noted a slightly higher risk of hypoglycemia for individuals with Type 1 diabetes compared to other daily insulins. Therefore, close medical supervision is absolutely critical during any transition.

Next Steps for Patients and Caretakers

Reducing your daily insulin burden does not mean taking matters into your own hands. You must never alter your dosage, frequency, or insulin type without professional guidance.

If you or your family member want to break free from the cycle of daily jabs, let’s discuss it during your next clinic visit. We can review your current blood sugar trends, evaluate your stability, and determine if switching to a once-weekly injection is the safest and most effective path forward for your health journey.
