A Wake-Up Call for My Patients: The Changing Face of Health in Mumbai
Namaste. I am writing to you today because recent national data has confirmed what I see every day in my clinic here in Mumbai: the way we are getting sick is changing, and it is becoming increasingly expensive to ignore.
While we are doing a better job of fighting off infections like malaria and diarrhea, our modern lifestyle is catching up with us. We are moving less, eating more processed food, and carrying the heavy stress of city life.

The Shift: From Infections to Lifestyle
The latest National Statistics Office (NSO) survey shows a dramatic shift in India's health landscape between 2018 and 2025.
The Rise of Lifestyle Diseases: Nearly 50% of Indians now report cardiovascular and metabolic issues (hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and thyroid). This has jumped from 31% just a decade ago.
The Good News: Infectious diseases (fever, jaundice, etc.) have dropped from 32% to 15%. We are winning the battle against germs, but losing the battle against our habits.
The Age Factor: If you are over 45, the risk is significantly higher. In the 60+ age group, nearly 44% reported being unwell recently.
The Financial Reality: Why Prevention is Better Than Cure
This is the part that concerns me most as your doctor. Even with more government insurance available, the cost of being hospitalized is skyrocketing.
Category | 2017-18 Average | 2025 Average | % Increase |
Out-of-Pocket Cost per Hospitalization | ₹20,135 | ₹34,064 | ~70% |
General Illness Reporting | 7.5% | 13.1% | Almost Double |
In a city like Mumbai, where private healthcare costs can be even higher than the national average, a single hospital stay can seriously impact your family’s savings.

My Advice to You
As your physician, I don’t want to see you only when you are in crisis. We need to focus on Preventive Care.
Screening is Non-Negotiable: If you are over 35, you must check your blood pressure and sugar levels annually. These "silent killers" often show no symptoms until it is too late.
Move in the City: Mumbai life is sedentary. Whether it’s walking at Marine Drive, a park in Borivali, or just taking the stairs at your office, 30 minutes of movement is your best investment.

Watch the "Mumbai Diet": High-salt snacks and sugary cutting chai contribute directly to that 70% increase in heart and metabolic ailments.
Review Your Insurance: While 44% of urban Indians are now covered by some insurance, ensure your policy is sufficient for the rising costs of private care in Maharashtra.
Bottom Line: We are living longer, but we are living "sicker" for more years. Let’s work together to change these statistics. Your health is your greatest wealth—don't wait for a hospital bill to remind you of that.
