The Ultimate Guide to Protecting Your Eyes from Mumbai’s Scorching Summer Sun

By Dr. Deepti Pithwa, Eye Specialist, Ashok and Ashok One Hospital, Mumbai

Namaste, Mumbai! If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already squinted your way through a sunny afternoon, cursed the glare bouncing off Marine Drive, or wiped away tears (of joy, I hope!) after a spicy vada pav. But did you know that our city’s famous sunshine, while great for Instagram, can be a real villain for your eyes? Let’s decode how to keep your vision sharp, stylish, and safe this summer-with a dash of humour and a lot of prevention!

1. Sunglasses: Your Eyes’ Best Friend (Not Just a Fashion Statement!)

Before you step out to conquer the world-or the local market-don’t forget your sunglasses. But here’s the catch: not all sunglasses are created equal. Look for shades that offer 100% UV protection (check for labels like “UV400” or “100% UVA/UVB protection”)-because your eyes deserve more than just a pretty frame. Wraparound or oversized frames are even better; they block sneaky rays from the sides and make you look like a Bollywood superstar (paparazzi not included).

2. Hats Off to Wide-Brimmed Hats

If sunglasses are Batman, a wide-brimmed hat is Robin.

Together, they shield your eyes from up to 50% more UV rays. Plus, hats are a fabulous excuse to up your style game-think of it as sun protection with a side of swag.

3. Hydrate Like a Mumbaikar in May

Mumbai heat can turn even the coolest cucumber into a shriveled raisin.

Dehydration isn’t just bad for your energy-it dries out your eyes, too! Aim for at least 2-3 litres of water a day to keep your tear film (the eye’s natural moisturizer) happy and healthy. If you’re feeling extra fancy, snack on water-rich foods like watermelon and cucumber. Your eyes (and skin) will thank you.

4. The Sunscreen Shuffle

Sunscreen is a must, but trust me, your eyes don’t want a taste.

Apply sunscreen gently around your eyes

Apply sunscreen carefully around your eyes and opt for mineral-based formulas that are less likely to run. If you do get some in your eyes, rinse immediately with clean water-don’t try to blink it away unless you want to look like you’re winking at strangers.

5. Swimming: Fun for You, Not for Contact Lenses

Swimming pools in Mumbai are a blessing, but they’re also full of chemicals and microbes. Never wear contact lenses while swimming-unless you want to invite bacteria to a pool party in your eyes1235.

Always remove contact lenses before swimming

Use prescription goggles instead, and always rinse your eyes with fresh water after a swim.

6. Eat Your Way to Eye Health

Summer is the perfect time to load up on eye-friendly foods. Munch on colourful fruits and veggies-think tomatoes, melons, and green peppers-for a boost of vitamins and antioxidants.

Don’t skip nuts and seeds; omega-3s are your eyes’ secret weapon.

7. Allergy Alert: Mumbai Edition

Dust, pollen, and pollution can make your eyes itchy and watery. If you’re a seasonal allergy sufferer, keep lubricating eye drops handy

and avoid rubbing your eyes. And yes, sunglasses help here too-double win!

8. Regular Eye Check-Ups: Prevention is Cooler Than Cure

Even if you’re following all these tips, don’t skip your annual eye exam. Early detection is key to keeping your vision crystal clear.

So there you have it, Mumbai! Protect your eyes, flaunt those shades, hydrate like a pro, and enjoy the summer sun-responsibly. Your eyes will love you for it, and you’ll have one less thing to squint about!
